SÀI have now spent a week working hard in the wheatfields, under the blazing sun,? Van Gogh wrote to Theo on 21 June 1888. That summer he devoted many paintings to the same subject. The waving grain gave him an opportunity to experiment with color and technique. Here he juxtaposed the golden yellow of the ripe wheat with a colorful swirl of yellow, green, red, brown and black in the foreground. The very high placing of the horizon means that nearly the whole canvas is covered with the colors of the growing crops. Visible in the distance are the low mountains of the Alpilles range.
