Charles Conder (1868 – 1909)

Chronology

24 October 1868 Charles Edward Conder is born in Tottenham, Middlesex, the second son, of six children, of James Conder, civil engineer and Mary Ann Ayres

1884 He is sent to Sydney, Australia, where he works for his uncle, a land surveyor for the New South Wales government

1886 Leaves the job and becomes an artist for the "Illustrated Sydney News", where he is in the company of other artists such as Albert Henry Fullwood, Frank Mahoney and Benjamin Edwin Minns. He also attends the painting classes of Alfred James Daplyn and joins the Art Society of New South Wales

1888 Moves to Melbourne, where he meets other Australian artists including Arthur Streeton, and shares a studio with Tom Roberts

1890 Returns to Europe, where he studied at the Académie Julian and becomes part of a circle of artists, including Anquetin, Bonnard, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

1891 Exhibits with William Rothenstein in Paris

1897 Settles in London, but he makes frequent visits to Dieppe and Paris

1899 First London one-man exhibition at the Carfax Gallery

1901 Marries Stella Maris Belford

9 February 1909 Dies at Virginia Water
