Kees van Dongen (1877 – 1968)
1899-1907

 

 

 

Chronology

1877 Kees van Dongen is born January 1st in Delfshaven near Rotterdam            

1895 Studies at Academy of Fine Arts, Rotterdam

1897 He moves to Paris and workes as an illustrator for "Revoue Blanche" and "L'assiette au Beurre"

1899 He returns to Paris to join Augusta Preitinger ("Guus"), whom he had met at the Academy

1901 Gets married to Augusta Preitinger           

1903 Exhibited his works publicly for the first time, and later he showed with Matisse in the Vollard Gallery            

1905 Became associated with the Fauves            

1906 The couple moved to the Bateau Lavoir at 13 rue Ravignan, where they were friends with the circle surrounding Pablo Picasso and his girlfriend Fernande Olivier

1908 Became a member of the group of German Expressionists "Die BrZcke" (the Bridge)

1926 He is awarded the Legion of Honour           

1927 He is awarded  the Order of the Crown of Belgium

1929 He receives French nationality and two of his works are admitted to the Musée du Luxembourg                       

1968 Died May 28 in Monte Carlo
