Chronology

13 April 1860 James Sidney Edouard, Baron Ensor is born in Brussels of English parents

1877 – 1880 Attends the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels

1880 Installs a studio in the attic of his parents‘ home in Ostend

1881 Exhibits his works for the first time

1883 Ensor, along with a few older students of the Brussels‘ academy establish the artists‘ association Les Vingt

1884 Travels to Paris

1885 Begins monumental series of drawings Visions. In September moves to Brussels for three months

1886 Travels to London

1891 The first monographic exhibition is held at the Galerie Dietrich in Brussels

1892 Makes a brief visit to London

1898 First one-man exhibition of drawings and prints abroad opens in Paris

1929 Named a Baron by King Albert

1933 Awarded the band of the Légion d'honneur           

19 November 1949 Dies in Ostend
