1850 Enters the Ecole de Dessin, where he studies with Lecoq de Boisbaudran

1854 Devotes time to copying the works of the old masters in the Musée du Louvre. Enrols in the Ecole des Beaux Arts

1857 Meets Edouard Manet

1858 Meets Whistler and his future wife, Victoria Dubourg

1859 Travels to London

1861 Second trip to London. For the first time exhibits in the Salon. Studies briefly under Gustave Courbet

1863 Exhibits in the Salon des Refuses

1875 Marries a fellow painter, Victoria Dubourg

25 August 1904 Dies in Buré, Orne in Lower Normandy
