French painter, of Swiss origin, given to mystical inspiration. Before and after 1888 he made frequent visits to Le Pouldu
and Pont-Aven as one of Gauguin's group of friends. He contributed to Remy de Gourmont's L' Ymagier. In March 1892 he exhibited with the Rosicrucians at Durand-Ruel. Always an intransigent idealist he died poor and in obscurity. His works are rare-he is represented, however, at the Musee d'art moderne in Paris (Tete de Bretonne).

Post-Impressionism, Michel-Claude Jalard, Edito Service SA, Geneva
