He gave up a brilliant academic career in Holland following a revelation he experienced while viewing an exhibition of Impressionist paintings. Haan was a highly cultured man from a well-to-do family. He discreetly came to Gauguin's aid and remained close to him at PontAven throughout 1889 and 1890.
