4 January 1878 Augustus Edwin John is born at Tenby in Pembrokeshire

1895 Attends the Tenby School of Art, then leaving Wales for London, studying at the Slade School of Art UCL in London

1898 Wins the Slade Prize

1900 Gets married to Ida Nettleship

1901 - 1904 Professor of Painting at Liverpool University

1903 Becomes a member of the New English Art Club

1905 - 1914 Goes to France, Holland and Belgium

1910 Spends two years painting in the Arenig valley. Also goes to Provence

1914 Gets attached to the Canadian forces as a war artist

1921 Associate of the Royal Academy

1928 - 1938 Elected a Royal Academician (re-elected in 1940)

1937 Becomes the President of the Gypsy Lore Society

1940 Becomes a member of the London Group. Having a retrospective exhibition of his drawings held at the National Gallery in London

1942 Awarded the Order of Merit

1948 - 1949 Arts Council touring retrospective exhibition

1954 Retrospective exhibition in the Diploma Gallery of the Royal Academy

1956 Retrospective exhibition at the Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield
