Chronology

13 March 1858 Maximilien Luce is born in Paris

1864 Attends school at l'Ecole communale

1876 Begins to work in the studio of Eugène Froment. Also takes additional art courses at l'Académie Suisseand in the studio of portrait painter Carolus-Duran. Becomes friends with Léo Gausson and 3ò4mile-Gustave Cavallo-Péduzzi

1879-1883 Spends time in the military, serving in Brittany at Guingamp

1884 Gausson and Cavallo-Péduzzi introduce Luce to the Divisionist technique developed by Georges Seurat

1887 Moves to Montmarte

1889 Shows six paintings at the Les XX exhibition in Brussels

1892 Participates in the Les XX exhibition again. Travels with Pissarro to London. Also visits Saint-Tropez with Signac

1893 Goes to Brittany

1904 - 1924 Lives in Auteuil

1897 Moves away from this “divisionist” style towards a more classic impressionism

1909 Elected Vice President of the Société des Artistes Indépendants

1925 Moves back to Paris

1934 Elected president of the Société des Artistes Indépendants after Signac’s retirement, but soon resigns in a protest against the society's policy to restrict the admission of Jewish artists

7 February 1941 Dies in Paris
