Chronology

July 12, 1884 Amedeo Clemente Modigliani is born into a Jewish family in Livorno, Italy

1898 – 1900 Works in Micheli's Art School

1902 Enrolls in the Accademia di Belle Arti (Scuola Libera di Nudo, or "Free School of Nude Studies") in Florence

1903 Suffers from tuberculosis. Moves to Venice, where he registers to study at the Istituto di Belle Arti

1906 Moves to Paris, where he is influenced by Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, the Fauves, then by Cézanne. Takes to excessive drinking and drugs, and is frequently in poverty

1909 Returns home to Livorno. Meets Brancusi

1910-1914 Works as a sculptor, making stone carvings of elongated heads

1917 Modigliani's first one-man exhibition is opened at the Berthe Weill Gallery. He is introduced to an art student named Jeanne Hébuterne. They start living together.

1918 Birth of a daughter, Jeanne

1918 - 1919 Works in the South of France, at Nice and Cagnes

January 24, 1920 Dies from tubercular meningitis in Paris
