Emil Nolde (1867 – 1956)

Chronology

7 August 1867 Emil Nolde  is born as Emil Hansen near the village of Nolde (since 1920 part of the municipality of Burkal in Southern Jutland, Denmark), in the Prussian Duchy of Schleswig

1884 -1888 Is trained as a craftsman and works in woodcarving, and works in furniture factories as a young adult

1889 Gaines entrance into the School of Applied Arts in Karlsruhe

1892-1898 Works as a drawing-instructor in Switzerland

1899 Goes to Dachau to become Adolf Hàlzel’s pupil

1902 Gets married Danish actress Ada Vilstrup and moves to Berlin. Meets collector Gustav Schiefler and artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff

1906-1907 Becomes a member of the revolutionary expressionist group Die BrZcke (The Bridge)

1908-1910 Becomes member of the Berlin Secession

1909 First attempts to paint using watercolors on non-absorbent paper

early 1920s Becomes a supporter of the Nazi party

1939 - 1945 Paints his ‘unpainted paintings’ in SeebZll

13 April 1956 Dies in SeebZll, Germany
