Chronology

28 December 1860  Philip Wilson Steer  is born in Birkenhead, in Merseyside, near Liverpool

1878 Studies at the Gloucester School of Art

1880 to 1881 Goes to the South Kensington Drawing Schools

1882 to 1884 Studies in Paris (firstly at the Académie Julian, and then in the 3ò4cole des Beaux Arts under Cabanel, where he becomes a follower of the Impressionist school)

1886 Becomes a founder of the New English Art Club

1887 Spends some time at the Etaples art colony

1893 to 1930 Teaches painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, London

1931 He is awarded the Order of Merit

18 March 1942 Dies in London
