French painter, designer, engraver and lithographer, born at Reims, died in Paris. He was influenced by Manet and Degas.
At first he belonged to the Impressionist group and took part in the 1880 and 1881 exhibitions but then confined himself to caricature drawings, many of them cruel, which appeared in Le Courrier jranrais, Le Figaro and Le Fifre. He was one of the
co-founders, with Caran d' Ache, of the magazine Psst! His political cartoons were mordant and passionate in tone. He subsequently concentrated on etching, a genre in which he displayed amazing mysticism (The Pilgrims of Emmaeus, Lourdes, La Miracu!ee). He was a precursorof Expressionism.
