He was one of the group surrounding Gauguin at Le Pouldu from 1888 to 1889 and knew Serusier in 1890. Although constantly in touch with the Nabis he was not influenced by them. He lived in Montmartre for ten years, although Brittany and Normandy provided his favourite subjects. He is often classed as a NeoImpressionist. His brushwork is thickly impasted in many cases.
