During a long stay in France, he began painting in the style of the Barbizon artists, before being converted to Impressionism through Claude Monet. He painted with Monet at Giverny (Panorama if Giverny). After his return to New York, he exhibited with the Society of American Artists; his was the first group of Impressionist paintings to have been shown in New York by an American.
